resolved
to write all of that down and analyze later. I bent my head over my
notebook and started writing diligently.
The sound of breaking glass broke my
concentration. It was coming from the pool table and I looked up, only to notice
that the pool table was gone. In its place there was a round table with a bunch
of cards and some cash on top of it. Six scruffy individuals where sitting
around the table - it seemed that two of them were having some kind of
altercation. Looking around I realized that the crowd in the joint had mutated
or something. They all seemed somewhat shorter than average, and their wardrobe
left a lot to be desired. There was only one female, other than the bartender in
the entire room and she was wearing way too much lipstick and lots of powder. It
reminded me of an old movie about the revolutionary war. I scratched my head and
figured that I deserved a stronger drink. I walked over to the bar. There was a
new bartender, but she had a friendly face, so I asked her about the hullabaloo
in the back. "Don't mind them boys" she said "they just need to blow off some
steam once in a while." I didn't quite know how to react to that, so I just
asked for a cognac and another beer. "Cognac?" she asked "what the heck is
that?" "Never mind that" I said "how about a bottle of whiskey?" She pulled a
bottle from underneath the bar and handed it over together with two pony
glasses. I took the stuff over to my perch, poured myself a stiff one and threw
it down the hatch. Nothing changed so I repeated the process a few more times.
The boys at the card table had quieted down and they were dealing another hand.
I mulled over the fact that she had given me two glasses. I guess I did walk in
with my wife, who else would that second glass be for?
I tried to take some more notes, but
the place started spinning around faster and faster. All I could see was a
kaleidoscope of colors and some shadows moving through them. There seemed to be
some people in that swirling fog, but I could not quite make out anything
coherent. When the spinning stopped, I was in a forest clearing sitting on a
tree stump, drinking mead from a leather flask. At least, I think it was mead.
Looking around me, I noticed that I was not alone. There were two rabbits and a
squirrel looking at me from behind some scraggly bushes. An owl started hooting
and I could see it on a branch not more than ten feet away from me. "Hey", I
said, "what the heck are you doing out here in the middle of the day?" "Hoo, hoo,
hoo?" asked the owl. "Who what?" I asked right back.
"Hoo, hoo, hoo are you?" I
thought the owl said - made me realize that I may have had more whiskey than I
could handle. I tried to jot down some more notes, only to realize that I was
holding a little twig in my pen holding fingers. "OK., I give up," I said,
taking another long drink from my flask. Nobody replied so I kept at it, until
it was empty. Feeling a bit tired, I took off my jacket, bundled it up and
propped it against the tree stump. I then lay my weary head on it and promptly
fell asleep. |
