OK, so it's not really a meal. But, if you are in Lisbon and
if you want a fantastic desert, it's worth taking the street car to
Belém. Pastéis de Belém is the name of this pastry shop as
well as the name of their most famous pastry. Everywhere in Portugal bakers are
trying to imitate this pastry claiming that it is the national pastry of
Portugal. I believe that this is the original one and it is well deserving of
its reputation. The original recipe was apparently created by a monk in the San
Jeronimo Monastery a bit down the road towards Lisbon. Somehow, the secret
recipe reached the bakers of this establishment in 1837 and they have been
creating it fresh ever since. The crust is a bit flaky, but delicious and
the custard is heavenly. I stopped there with my wife because we read about it
somewhere. We took a couple to go, cause we actually had only one day in Lisbon
and wanted to get back to our hotel. I got some powdered sugar on mine. Ate it
on the go and it was amazing! I did however gat powdered sugar all over myself.
Next time, we are going to take a table in the place.
