A Closer Look – part 2

Hot off the presses and just in the nick of time. Now that it is finally finished, I got a chance to read the rest of the stories and I have to say I was quite impressed. This kinky collection of dirty shorts is a fitting companion to the month of October. Everyone knows that October is Oktoberfest as well as Rocktober among other things, but for the ones who were not aware please mark it on your calendars: Continue reading

Velvett Fogg

In 1969 I started spinning platters at an Israeli Disco in Haifa. The place was known only as 120 after its number on Panorama Street on Mount Carmel. Actually it was quite popular and I was developing a reputation especially among the non-English speaking crowd. They would request a song like Okey-Pokey-Pokey and I would guess right away that they were asking for Funky, Funky Broadway.  Anyway, the owner had some rules about what I could and couldn’t play. Among the LP’s that I was not to play were Jimi Hendrix’s Electric Continue reading

Lost Girl

Spoiler alert: Some crucial parts of the plot are being disclosed, so do not read this if you intend to watch the series.

I’ve been hearing good things about this series for a while now. Turns out, Netflix has 4 of the 5 seasons available. I started watching and got hooked on it quite quickly. Continue reading

Roy Harper – The Game

I have been listening to Roy since the early 70’s. At the time, I was very interested in anything that came out on the Harvest label. Many greats were recording for that label at the time, among them: Pink Floyd & Deep Purple. After buying “Flat Baroque & Berserk” and being very impressed, I proceeded to buy every single thing of Roy Harper’s and I’ve only slowed down a little in the 90’s. I have been listening to HQ again lately after a few years of not hearing it and it just reminded me why I love this guy so much. Which is why I have just ordered 6 CD’s of his that I did not own. In any case, this is a guy that has the admiration of a Continue reading

Viva Carlos Santana

I just heard that The Alabama Shakes are going to be playing at the Forest Hills Stadium. It made me sad to think that they are playing such a potentially great venue that ‘sucks and blows at the same time’ as Homer Simpson might say. The stadium is conveniently located and I would love to go see them there. Unfortunately, my last concert there has cured of any such ideas.

I had previously been to this venue about 33 years ago. Elvis Costello had put on a mediocre show, mainly because his sound Continue reading

The Lions, The Churchills & some Chocolate

I have lived in Israel for 14 years (1961-1975.) Still have some ties to that country. Enough introductions – let me get to the actual subject: Israeli pop/rock music & me.

The sixties (that’s when I got there at the age of 14) were a musically enlightening period in my life. I did not care very much for the early 60’s Israeli music scene; it was mostly Russian & Middle-Easter influenced folk. Continue reading

The Wolf of Wall Street

A few of my friends as well as some acquaintances have recommended this movie to me. I am usually quite reluctant to accept advice about anything from anyone, especially when it involves huge blockbusters. Eventually, I broke down and watched it when I couldn’t find anything else that appealed to me at the time. I have to admit that it is a great movie and I didn’t expect anything less from such a great team. I mean Scorsese and DiCaprio – what could possibly go wrong? The only thing that I can hold against it, is that it took three hours – I did not expect that, so it ran a bit later into the night that I intended. And one more thing, DiCaprio’s character, Jordan tells his dad at some point that his future wife shaves her pubic hair. He then proceeds to tell him that in that particular time period all the women shave. I believe he said Continue reading

Danny Ben-Israel

Danny Ben Israel had a couple of hits with The Northern Command Troupe (among the IDF draftees, some of those with any talent got assigned to one of the many entertainment units.) After getting discharged, he attended the Festival of the Isle of Wight and discovered the correct usage of sex and drugs while travelling Europe. Eventually, he came back to Israel and (in 1970) created one of the greatest psychedelic masterpieces ever – that was “Bullshit 3 1/4”. I had remembered him fondly from my teenage years when my voice was squeaky and clean just Continue reading

Mr. Llime’s It’s My Life-Don’t Fear the Reaper Mashup

This is where I get to cut Mr. Llime down a notch or two. I do have to admit that mashing It’s My Life by Bon Jovi with Don’t Fear the Reaper by Blue Oyster Cult is actually a good idea – basically, he is juxtaposing life and death. It’s the execution that needs some improvement. He is doing all the lead vocals, and it is obvious that he had recorded everything at home, probably on his computer – it certainly sounds like it. However, even after I get over that, Continue reading

Pain & Gain

Weird! I would have never pictured Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson portraying two stone cold killers who chopped up their victims and torched the parts. The movie, based on a true story is highly disturbing and the only reason that I would want to say anything about it is one line spoken by a character in the movie. Sorina Luminiţa played by Bar Paly, is actually patterned on the very real Sabina Petrescu. So, in the movie Sorina is talking about why she lost the Miss Romania contest, ending up with a runner-up position. She blames the judges and her statement was ‘I don’t know why that bitch won, my pizda is better than her pizda!’  That’s it, I think (the pizda was absolutely there a Romanian word in an English sentence, Continue reading
